Black Panther will be the opening film for first Saudi cinema in 35 years

Saudi Arabia’s first cinema in more than 35 years will open on 18 April, showing the action movie Black Panther.

The world’s biggest cinema chain, AMC, is to open up to 40 cinemas in some 15 Saudi cities over the next five years.

Saudi Arabia’s last cinemas shuttered in the 1970s due to powerful clerics.

In 2017, the government said it would lift the ban as part of ambitious economic and social reforms pushed by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

The Marvel blockbuster will be screened at a gala premiere in the capital Riyadh on 18 April.

The plush new cinema's main theatre will be built with 500 leather seats, orchestra and balcony levels, as well as marble bathrooms. Three more screens will be added by mid-summer.
