Birds are special animals that have unique features. They are the only creatures on Earth that grow feathers. These feathers help them in different ways. Some soft feathers, called down feathers, keep them warm. Other feathers, the body feathers, give them their shape. The strong feathers on their wings, known as flight feathers, help most birds to fly through the air.
Birds have wings and strong muscles in their arms and chest that allow them to flap these wings and fly. Their bodies are also very light because they have air inside and light bones, which makes flying easier. While most birds can fly, some big birds like the ostrich are too heavy to take off.
Birds start their lives by hatching from eggs. Their parents usually build nests in trees, on the ground, or even on buildings to keep the eggs safe and warm. When the baby birds hatch, they cannot see and have no feathers. Their parents take care of them by bringing them food and keeping them warm until they grow their own feathers and learn how to fly away from the nest.
